About Beds Plus
Beds Plus, commenced in 1983 when Peter designed a new breakthrough bed for his mother, Olive. Olive suffered badly from an arthritic condition which left her in agony and frequent sleepless nights.
Peter researched into her condition and discovered a large portion of her nightly pain was a direct result of poorly designed beds, our body’s aren’t straight and flat and the standard design that was used mattress construction which pushed against the body and aggravated already painful arthritic pressure points in her joints.
As a result Peter designed and developed a new technology in mattress construction. Utilising different grades of polyurethane components to support the human body, the mattress he created, dramatically reduced the extreme pain she experienced of a night time and for the first time in many years was able to sleep through the night.
Olive’s treating physician and rheumatoid specialist noticed the dramatic improvement in her arthritic symptoms and the substantial reduction in Olive’s need for prescribed medication of sleeping tablets and anti-inflammatory drugs that she had come to depend upon to get through the nightly agony of her arthritis.
Recognising the benefits of this innovative mattress to a significant number of arthritis sufferers, Olive’s doctor suggested that with Peter’s permission he undertake an evaluation of this invention under medical supervision at Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital.
Peter readily agreed hopeful that this indeed could help other sufferers like his mother, Olive, improve their quality of life too.
The test results proved conclusively that the mattress was of great benefit to patients being treated for acute arthritic rheumatics and further more also relieved the pain for other patients with pressure related symptoms i.e. bed sores, tuberous ulcers and soft tissue damage. These medical conditions were quite often a direct link to patients being using to poorly constructed mattresses for extended periods of time.
As a direct result of the evaluation findings, enquiries from Doctors referrals grew in number to the stage, that Peter recognised a need to carry stock on hand.
Peter’s original design was made by Dunlop Bedding.
The First Store
Peter selected the Balcatta Industrial area to open his first bed showroom. Together with two employees and limited family members’ voluntary assistance, Peter commenced his retail bedding career.
The fledging business began to grow with the increasing number of Doctor’s referrals and now added referrals received from customers already experiencing the benefits of the product, keen to have their friends and family experience the same relief they had.
Peter hired his driver/storeman along with a second hand delivery vehicle and commenced the delivery of the product to his customers.
Peter discovered a significant number of elderly customers had difficulty in finding the showroom.
This triggered the urgent need to advertise clearly the store’s location.
